Thrips

• Belong to the Order Thysanoptera
• Tiny (most species are less than 1/20”), skinny insects with fringed wings
• Color varies among species
• Thrips have piercing/sucking mouthparts
• Some species are beneficial, with a diet of mites & other insects
• Species of mite pests can scar fruit & distort other parts of plants
• Damage is usually discovered before thrips are actually found
• Other pests can cause damage similar to that caused by thrips, so pest identification is important to consider
