Whiteflies

  • There are many species of whitefly, all belong to the Order Homoptera
  • Tiny, moth-like
  • Can usually be found on the underside of leaves in groups
  • Possess piercing/sucking mouthparts and excrete “honeydew”
  • During high infestation a cloud of whiteflies will disperse when disturbed
  • Develop rapidly in warmer weather and in greenhouses
  • Can persist on a wide range of host plants
  • Ant numbers must be controlled before using biological control
  • Common whitefly pests include:
