Bugs Behaving Badly

It is not always easy to identify a particular pest. In fact, knowing exactly what type of pest is being dealt with is a crucial component to effective biological control as some extremely useful beneficial organisms are host-specific.

Because insects enjoy the greatest amount of diversity of any group of organisms in the world, pests can take on a variety of forms. There are soil-dwelling pests such as thrips, there are pests such as cabbage loopers which attach themselves to plants and slowly consume them, there are honeydew-secreting pests such as aphids that suck the juices out of plants and coat them with sticky excrement, and the list goes on. In addition, the multiplicity of species among many of these pests makes the task of accurate identification all the more difficult.

The description of pests provided by this website is not intended as a guide for insect identification but as a reference tool and resource for increasing awareness of biological pest control solutions.
